Social Media Tips for Small Buisness’

I had the pleasure to see Social Media Guru Dan Zelikman talk a couple of weeks ago at the Hawaii Chamber of Commerce Event. It was at Dan’s first Social Media Seminar that I first heard of Foursquare, now 12 badges later, i had the chance to hear what’s new in Social Media. This was a Seminar for Small Business’ in Hawaii. Dan currently works at Civilbeat.com- Hawaii’s on-line only newspaper. and you can find him at danzelikman.com Here are the Highlights:

Content is KING
Engagement is QUEEN
You need BOTH to make things work well
Dont do one way conversations, make sure you engage your audience in a two-way communication
Context-Stay Relevent and Human
Brand Voice and Consistency are key
Variety is good
Listen first, then share.
Social Media is a marketing Tool not a Miracle..but it’s a great Marketing Tool

Here are some helpful areas that Dan Recommends for starters:
Tumblr.com
wordpress.com
(Here)
Flickr.com
Justin.TV
youtube.com
LinkdIn
wefollow.com
– Type in something that interests you and follow and watch them and see how they do it. Then take tips from them and do your own.

And to keep you up to date on Current Social Media Trends check out:
Allthingsdigital.com
mashable.com
slideshare.com
techcrunch.com

I’d also Add a few things like Twitpic-makes it real easy to upload pictures to your twitter account for free and I really enjoy I web on the mac for making personal websites really easy and fun to do! There’s No need to know HTML.

Have a nice Memorial Day Weekend!! @scottmackenzie3 on Twitter
