Roy Firestone LIVE in Hawaii!

Some Laughed..and Some Really Did…Cry!

Roy Firestone’s Autograph-inside the Book-“Don’t Make Me Cry” 2-8-12

Yesterday-2-8-12 I had the pleasure of seeing and hearing Roy Firestone Speak at the HAB Luncheon at the Ala Moana Hotel, Hibiscus Ballroom.  Prior to seeing him speak, My friend from Work-Wade and I went over to meet him and purchase his book entitled “Don’t Make Me Cry”.  He was really friendly, chatted with us a bit, and signed my new book.

Next we had some of the best Mass Luncheon food I’ve ever tasted.  The meal consisted of a delicious Caesar Salad  with super good dressing, Chicken with tomato Parmigiano sauce, with delectable fried eggplant and a side of olive oil, butter and spinach spaghetti.. Oh Yeah, it was G-O-O-D!

Then Roy came on and spoke, what I liked best is how he incorporated both his own personality and various voices along with lots of fun clips from past interviews including the time he made Cuba Gooding Jr “Cry” in Jerry McGuire! Roy has won 7 Emmy Awards and has interviewed over 5,000 people. Much of the time it looks like he’s just winging it, but He told us point-blank that when he does an interview, he totally researches his subject and memorizes almost everything he can about him or her. Then he doesn’t pre prepare  questions, he writes down general words that he wants to cover in the interview.  And he didn’t say this-but I suspect he does write down some tips on how he will get the interview to become emotionally appealing. I doubt he tries to get them to cry, but I figure he does try to get them to open up emotionally for a more appealing interview for the TV audiences.

Roy actually made half of the room cry when he was talking to us. Most of the time he made us laugh, but during a really captivating story about a girl who fell down when she was running, then got up to finish the race and WON the race, half the room was in tears!

Some of the fun things and Highlights from his talk were:

1.  A Story about the time he met Wilt Chamberlin-Wilt was sitting in a luxury mobile wearing a bright suit, hat with a big long feather, fancy shoes, the whole works. Roy asked him “How Bout an interview sometime?” and Wilt responded by saying “Aaaah, not right now, I’m trying to keep a LOW Profile”.

2. The time he interviewed Shaq and asked him the difference between him and Kobe, and Shaq said “Kobe’s more of a loner and I’m more of a socialist”

3. He showed famed coach and broadcaster,  Hubie Brown talking about his father and this was extremely emotional-it was another time that the crowd went into tears-this time MORE than half the room. In Roy’s Book he mentions “When Hubie talked about his father, he went into a virtual trance, it was the most intensely emotional interview I’ve been part of”. and even the tape of this sent  more thanhalf the room into tears!

4. Many of the biggest stars have a lot in common-Competitive Greatness, Passion, and Preparedness. This included Jimmy V, John Wooden, Ali, and my favorite and Roy’s favorite running back of all time-The Great-“Sweetness”-Walter Payton.

And the last story he told was about M. Ali and how he had the ability to “uplift” practically anyone. Even though Ali had a huge ego and a loud mouth, he was quite passionate about others.  Roy Ended the session by letting us all know that we should all try to go out into our days, throughout  the world and our lives and try to uplift others. This included giving help and positivity to everyone-your waitress, the Janitor, the CEO, your co-worker and especially your Team-Mates!

All in all it was a good Hour or so spent at the Ala Moana Hotel.  When I get a chance I’ll read my new book and let you know more.  Have a nice weekend!

Well, he said Don't, but he Did!!

The New Look-Look at the NBA-All Star Starters!

Lebron’s Shoes

Today is the first Day of the “New Look” of Advertisinginhawaii.com, in honor of it, we aren’t going to do a blog about advertising.  Today is just a Blog listing the Newly announced NBA All-Star Starters for the NBA All Star Game on Sunday February 26, 2012.  I’m just making sure that posting posts and pictures works and I like the NBA All-Star Game a lot! I usually watch it 3-4 times on my DVR! Sorry-I don’t have pictures of players, all the player pix I nabbed from the net were “not allowed” to be uploaded on the blog, so we have a picture of one of Lebron’s shoes.  Anyways:  Here’s the 2012 NBA All-Star Starters!

Carmelo Anthony-Knicks
Dwight Howard-Magic

iPad 3 Hype Begins

iPad3 Picture courtesy of iPad2.info

Today I’m going to be completely lazy and  just copy and paste a blog posting from  Alec Banks of HypeBeast.com – who got the information from Techcrunch.  I’m doing it because we had so much fun tracking the newest iPhone, I dont want you to miss out on the early hype on the new iPad 3.  I have lots of commercials to write tonight at my regular job But don’t want you to miss out on the early hype on the iPad 3!  Hope we get some even better news about it over the next few weeks. Basically, it says that the new iPad will have awesome graphics!  Here is the excerpt from Alec Banks of hypebeast.com:

Just as the Consumer Electronics Show was winding down in Las Vegas, Bloomberg has three people claiming they have intimate details about the Apple iPad 3. Among the “unconfirmed,” yet tangible rumors, is that it went into production this month with a launch coming in March. It will have a quad-core CPU (as opposed to the dual-core A5 found in iPad 2) as well as a “high-def” screen. The new display is capable of greater resolution than the current version, with more pixels on its screen than some high-definition televisions. The introduction of the new iPad will be Apple’s first major hardware release since the death of company co-founder Steve Jobs in October.

AdvertisingInHawaii.com-What’s Hot in NYC

I’m over in NYC this week and whenever I come here I totally dig seeing the advertising and marketing that’s happening here in person. It’s so much more fun and interesting for me to see it in person, then through a blog or on a website. It also brings you a totally non-biased report on who’s doing the best and coolest stuff in town!

Here’s a sampling of What’s Hot Now in Advertising and Marketing in NYC! As witnessed live by advertisinginhawaii.com

1.  Times Square Billboards:  Oh, I can stand for hours and look at the billboards and snap pictures of them.  Back in the Day-The real looking smoke rings that came from the Marlboro man was really good and so was the Chock Full O’ Nuts Coffee Billboard.  Now-a-days T-Squre feels like it’s on mega steroids, with Hollywoodesque art happening everywhere.   Some of the billboards basically show crisp, clean snippets of TV shows that are clearer than the TV I watch at my house!  I saw a :60-:90 billboard snippet of some fun reality show where the ladies were partying and having a great time ala’ NYE, then they got in a cat fight.  I’m not quite sure of the show, but it was really fun to watch on the Mega-Mega-Mega-Tron.  And I really like the girl with the blue lips as seen at the top of this post, she really stands out from the clutter and clatter of the rest of the Billboards. I would say the color palette does if for them. And the boldness of the vision of the art director.

Bloomingdale's makes you an instant Celebrity!

2.Bloomingdale’s Window Display:  OH the FUN that I had here!  Basically I walked along from window to window, pressed the star button next to the window, it took a picture of me, then within seconds, my picture appeared above the window!  It was so much fun, I did it at all 3 windows!  I felt like a star right in the center of the universe (BTW: that’s what I call the area around Bloomingdale’s in NYC).  And what I liked is your/my picture stayed on there for three slots, thus, it gave me lots of time to take a picture of it.  Everyone down there was having a great time! So much fun, I busted out the Bloomie’s card and bought a couple of things. 15% discount on purchases with a  Bloomingdale’s card all day long and lots of things were already 40-50% off.  Here’s the picture of me in the window display at Bloomingdale’s-December 2011-Mid Town NYC.

Me in the Window Display at Bloomingdale's Mid-Town Dec NYC

3.  In Cab Advertising:  As you know, I totally love QR codes and lately I’ve been looking for the best practices on how to use them well.  When I arrived in NYC, I got in the cab and a TV screen came on that told us about some Celebrity Gossip, sports scores, then a really cool ad came on to win Sunglasses.  What I liked about the ad is the lady in the spot, told us at the beginning of the spot, “Get Ready to scan the QR code to win a pair of Sunglasses”  this gave the rider plenty of time to locate their QR code on their phone and by the end of the :30 seconds you would be ready to scan it to win. I scanned it and it took me to their site and told and sold me on their sunglasses and they had a really easy to fill out form to win the prizes-especially wise when using a smart-phone.  Congrats!

4.DESIGUAL Stores NYC:   A Couple of years ago I noticed how fun and exciting this store seemed to be from the mix of dark lighting and bright colors inside the store. Now their marketing is proving their vibe to be true and in synch with their brand’s funness. In their store in Soho, These guys actually had a real red carpet outside on the side-walk, then as I walked in I was treated with bright balloons and thumping yet not overly banging house music and a free red bull!  How fun is that!  They made me feel special and gave me a bit of caffeine to wake up from my non sleep I usually get when I vacation over here in the big city. Note:  the only thing that did NOT match up with the marketing was the people working there.  They could care less about giving me a drink or a balloon or even asking me if I needed any help. So, You guessed it, I bought nothing. Two years ago I bought my first pair of what I would call expensive jeans ($220), at that time they were nice to me and the jeans were really nice and different, fun and exciting like their marketing.  But mainly they were attentive and helped me with my needs. Little did they know, I was back to do some shopping, but nope, not if you’re not going to be friendly forget it!  Double Note:  at Union Square I saw a shirt I was for sure going to buy-I actually still want it. But I asked the lady at the counter a simple question of “do you have any more of these?” she snapped and shouted “NO” so  once again, no sale. I do still want the shirt. But I just can’t buy from employees that suck! I forget her Kiosk name, but do hope she reads this blog sometime. Triple Note to lady:  It was a Black and grey and blue plaid shirt with buttons with X’s on them.  Back to DESIGUAL, here’s a picture of what they had going on this past weekend in Soho in NYC. Their marketing was good, just not their sales people or sales training.

Cyber-Monday

Black Friday-Date Time and Place?

Black Friday was all about figuring out when it started and where?  Wednesday at Midnight? Thursday at 6P? Thursday at Midnight or Friday morning. Once that was done it was time to stand in line or shop at your favorite store. And according to the CEA/Consumer Electronics Association’s survey, Nearly 50% of Black Friday and the weekend bought electronics.  Black Friday also saw a nice surge in Retailers radio advertising:  Media Monitors reports that Home Depot ran 50,924 commercials and Sears ran 20,932 commercials for their Black Friday Sale-A-Brations.

Cyber-Monday Deals and Creativity

Cyber-Monday advertising seemed to have a lot to do with email marketing.  I found ALL of these deals via emails to my 3 email accounts. Some have some pretty creative ways to sell their products on this special day.  Living in Hawaii, if you want to get the best deals here, its best shop Sunday Night before going to bed, to catch all the Eastern Time Zone deadlines.

NBA.Com Cyber Monday:  Save 25% with promo code SLAMDUNK  Not really sure when this ends, the site says 3AM Eastern, is that Monday or Tuesday morning? BTW Their Black Friday sale was 15% off.

NFL.com:  20% off everything and some selected gear at up to 65% off regular prices.

Delta.com:  Here you could use your miles to buy gifts for the Holidays!  They have everything from Macy’s to Barnes and Noble to QVC.  And today your points could double, triple and even Quintuple!!  And I just thought they gave away free magazines with the points I’ve never used. Go figure.

Jeffrey Gitomers Sales Caffeine Site:  25% off everything on the entire Website.  (Except Webinars and Seminars)   The Big 25% off Everything headline was really Big and direct.

Ticketmaster.com Merchandise Store:  This was a fun one, just a little confusing.  Buy 2 get 10% off, Buy 3 Get 15% off, Buy 4 Get 20% off, and buy 5 of anything and get 25% off.  Also free shipping for purchases totally over $125.

Beyondtherack.com: Also another fun way to market the big day.  They staggered their sales with different products going on sale at 5A, 11A and 4P.  They also provide free shipping now through November 30, 2011.

Macprovideo.com:  Has the Big 50% Deal going on now

Shopnbc.com:  It’s just one big sale on everything you could imagine over there. Watches, Jewelery, Beds, lamps etc. Just too much to write about.

LogicBox.com:  I’m a Mac person myself but this deal is really good.  Dell XPS 17 2nd Gen Intel  laptop with 8GB of RAM, 1 TERABITE of storage, 1080P and Blue Ray.  Was costing you:  $1,613.99 and today on Cyber Monday its only:  $899.99 Plus FREE shipping!

What did you buy?  Which did you prefer? Black Friday? Cyber Monday?  or maybe shopping later in the month?  LMK Have a Nice Cyber-Monday-I bet it starts on Sunday next year.  LOL

QR Codes vs Blippar

Well, a few weeks ago I was thinking what would be a great way to make a QR code look cooler? Mobi has some that are colorful, Macy’s put a Star around theirs, But these guys at Blippar have taken the concept to a whole new level. I received this tip from springwise.com then went to Google-Ize the word blippar and I found us this awesome video.

The video has some slow portions, but I’d advise staying patient through it until you at least see the Omega watch portion. What happens here is he puts the phone on a print ad for Omega and within seconds the man in the video has placed 3 or 4 different Omega watches on to his own wrist! Not real watches, but virtual watches and they do look like they are on his wrist. Blippar is Pretty happening. Congrats on the cool concept to all the folks who work over at blippar. I can’t wait until you get Nike as a client and I can wear all the Jordans I could ever imagine! I wont have to buy another pair of shoes ever again. I’ll be able to virtually wear whatever I want-whenever I want. Too cool!

QR Code Cuts

QR Code Hair Cuts

QR Codes have to be the most fun thing I like to write about this year.  We started off on how easy they are to make, then how to capture them, then many an article on various ways marketers are getting them out to the public.  This Has to be one of the coolest ways yet and it’s sure going to garner a lot of free publicity.

What they have done is hired Wayne Rooney’s hair stylest-Daniel Johnson to cut QR codes directly into the heads of the Bromley FC players.  I’m sure these take a long time to do and you would need a really good stylist to do it right due to the preciseness of a QR code.  By the looks of the video, seems like Daniel Johnson has achieved this.  The QR codes are cut into the player’s heads and the fans are supposed to capture the codes with their QR code Readers and Scanners, which will then take them directly to the Betfair Mobile Site.  I love the idea and the heads look pretty rad, it will be great for publicity, just not sure how many people will be able to scan a running Footballer’s head when he’s trying to score a goal or defend the opposing players. Thanks to Trendhunter.com for the tip.  Check out the Video below, it shows one of the players getting the Betfair QR code cut into his scalp. Pretty Amazing!

*The Bromley FC Footballers will sport these new QR Code Haicuts this Saturday when they take on the Leyton Orient Team.

Happy Veterans Day

Happy veterans Day-Yummy Breakfast Food-Bi Bim Bop!

I had breakfast this morning with my good friend Gene from Non Stop Travel.  I always have the same Sizzling Steak. But today, since it was breakfast and a special Holiday, I ordered this delicious Food.  It also comes sizzling and all you do is mix it up and the egg cooks and there are lots of healthy vegetables in there.  Yum-from one of my favorite places to eat on Oahu-Sorabol on Keeaumoku Street across Ross and Sam’s Club. Have a Happy Day! Bi-Bimitty-Bop-Bop-Bop. (Photo shot with my new iPhone4S)

NO NBA-YES NIKE

Just a couple of days after talking about the really nice videos on the web especially the 5BORO Skate Vid, I opened up my email today and Ad Age MediaWorks Had a pretty cool Story on The Bigger companies and their videos. I personally am not buying any new sneakers until the NBA season starts, but NIKE has come out with a pretty good way to TRY and help their sales without the NBA playing their games. It’s the video above, It is pretty good especially the people doing the “Pop a Shot” I would have included a bit more street ball if it was me, but overall pretty nice video and the slogan “Basketball Never Stops” sounds like it will help sell some kicks.

Then AdAge MediaWorks listed the top 10 bigger brands with the most views this week. Was interesting, I don’t seek videos like these out much, but I have seen the Hot Pockets video and I wrote about the Carlesberg video on  this blog on October 29th, thinking it was A REALLY GOOD VIDEO and thought it was also a  Burlbling underground video. But lo and behold it’s in the TOP 10 this week. Bet they are for sure selling some beer from it!

For quick view access for all ten videos click here

Here’s the listing:

NIKE  Basketball Never Stops
APPLE  Introducing iPhone 4s
YOUTUBE/LENOVO Spacelab what will you do
HOT POCKETS Teens in the Wild (I saw this somewhere this week-I wasnt the target audience that’s for sure)
FIAT  Life is best when Driven
DERMABLEND Go Beyond the Cover- (This Vid is quite amazing!)
MICROSOFT Productivity Future Vision 2011
EVIAN Live Young  (My Favorite bottled Water-For some reason it tastes the cleanist-maybe it’s the advertising?)
GOOGLE The Web is what You Make It
CARLSBERG-That Calls for a Carlsberg (One of the best on-line vids I’ve ever seen)

With APEC in Town, You Might want to skate to work?

If you need to get around Waikiki, Why not try some alternative methods from your usual car? You could walk, Bike, jog, Rollerblade, hoverboard, sail or boat, Heliport, teleport or even skateboard your way around town. Any of these modes might help you ease your stress of getting stuck in traffic in your car or truck.

Actually, Since I write a few different blogs, I run into many different trends, New gadgets, lots of modes of advertising, and many really cool new exciting things. While I was checking for something to write about on streetzblog.com I found this video. And I decided it was much better for advertising in Hawaii.First-It gave me the idea of alternative ways to get around town this week during APEC. Second and most importantly This Vimeo Video matches my advertising blog the best because, lately I’ve been seeing some GREAT video work coming out on YouTube and Vimeo. These video’s are like mini movies, they are professional looking, usually come with great music and sound effects and give the viewer a great vibe of the brand being portrayed. Like this video, one can totally breathe and feel the brands vibe in less than 3 minutes. I actually bought a pair of Jump sneakers after watching a really cool Vid done by them. I’ll try to dig it up on the net if it’s still there.

The video above is for a skateboard company in NYC called 5Boro. It has a real nice NYC vibe, plus some pretty awesome tricks and I totally love it when they show the guy skating while filming the other skater, that just plain amazes me every time I see something like that. And for once, someone actually does wipe-out in the Vid!It adds some real cool reality to the vid and Not everyone is a perfectly awesome street skater and Yes, they do fall..at least sometimes.

I’m still a big believer in using traditional media to get things done for you, to direct people to take action, promote a concert or event, and TM is especially effective as the best way to let people know that you or your website, blog, Facebook, vimeo or YouTube sites actually exist! I suggest trying a radio campaign with enough frequency on the right station to fit your brand and I will tell you right now-it will work in getting people to your other means of advertising. We recently did a campaign for Bespoke Custom Tattoo and their Facebook likes increased each day the spots ran. We also included a pretty topical Wiz Khalifa promotion to go with it, but that’s what we do and that’s another reason it worked.

As I continue to write these blog posts, I am finding that the quality on the videos are getting better and better and are quite a nice way to brand your product. The point here is it’s another great tool to use or add to your arsenal. And I like it!

Note: From a Blog I wrote a few weeks ago. I still think it makes sense to pick 3-4 modes of advertising and do them well. Like Radio, Facebook and Videos. Or TV, Facebook and twitter. Or newspaper/billboards, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. As you noticed, for now at least I have Facebook in everything-that is the one constant I would use no matter what. Last I checked 800 Million ++ people are using it, the numbers are just staggering. And at least as of today, November 8, 2011-I don’t think you want to do 11-12 different modes, unless you have a really, really big passionate staff or no life. Things change so quickly, but for now, I’d go with the 3-4 modes of advertising and do them well.

If you’re looking for some marketing ideas or want my team to work on a campaign for you, just call or text me at 808 479-9928 or email me at scott.mackenzie@coxradio.com ..Hey and if you decide to skate to work this week, wear some safety gear, I don’t want you getting hurt from something I recommended. Peace!
